6 Tips to encourage good oral habits in children

Teething is one of the first rituals of life. Here are some tips that will encourage good oral hygiene habits in kids.

Kids are fond of their chocolates, candies, and potato chips. As a parent, it’s your duty to ensure that your child follows good oral practice. Here are some easy ways to encourage them to follow good oral hygiene

Don’t just send them to brush, do it together. Children need supervision for brushing their teeth till 6 years of age. Kids like to imitate those around them. This will help them in developing the habit of brushing. And you will also be able to monitor their brushing technique and can guide them wherever they are wrong.

Let them choose their own toothbrush. Give choices of extra soft bristles with a smaller head designed as per kids. This will encourage them to brush as they are getting the brush of their choice. Give them pea-sized toothpaste once they start spitting.

You can make every brushing and flossing session a storytelling event. Children love stories, adventures, and fairy tales. Listening to exciting stories while brushing will help them to ease the process.

Kids love chocolate, candies, chips. These sugary and starchy food items can attack teeth and lead to tooth decay. Parents need to avoid sugary drinks and foods for kids. Instead of banning all their favorites, try feeding your kids dairy products. If at all they resist, reduce the frequency of intake and make sure they eat them after meals.

Don’t share your personals with them like your toothbrush, tongue cleaner. It’s not a healthy habit and germs can get passed to each other.

Keep a close check on their oral hygiene. Keep a regular routine of visiting the dentist twice a year with your children.

Protect your kid’s teeth

Proper dental care and oral hygiene start at home, oral health habits will encourage a lifetime of positive health:

1. Brushing twice daily – Also flossing is a must.

2. Healthy eating habits – Avoid sugary and starchy foods.

3. Discouraging nail-biting in kids.
