Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021 – Faith over fear

Breast cancer is a treatable illness, and chances of survival are greater if it’s identified in time. Early screening and detection of breast cancer can save a patient’s life. Read on to know more about this cancer

One woman gets diagnosed with breast cancer every 4 minutes in India, and one woman dies of breast cancer every 13 minutes, making it the most prevalent cancer among Indian women. Women in India are generally diagnosed at a later, more advanced stage with a poor prognosis. About 1 in 28 women are expected to develop breast cancer during their lifetime. By 2030, breast cancer will cause more deaths among women in India than any other malady. Almost 50 percent of breast cancer patients first visit the doctor when they are in stage 3, and 15-20% of patients visit when they are in phase 4. In one study, scientists estimated that 10-year survival rates for women fell from 75 percent for stage 1 breast cancer patients to 5 percent for phase 4 patients. The survival rate of breast cancer is low because the detection takes place late. The only way to change these numbers is by increasing awareness.

The month of October is observed as Breast cancer awareness month. The theme for Breast Cancer Awareness month 2021 is “RISE: Rally in Supporting, Serving and Screening Everyone,” which encourages women to go for mammogram screening and raise breast cancer awareness with the support of their family and friends. The most efficient intervention for breast cancer control is early detection and rapid treatment. Some early signs and symptoms of breast cancer are

A breast or thickening in the breast that feels different from the surrounding tissue Change in the size, shape or appearance of a breast Nipple turning inward Nipple or breast skin that is red, dry, flaking or thickened Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood Redness or pitting of the skin over your breast, like the skin of an orange

Some tips for a healthy breast

Vitamin D from foods and sunlight exposure may help protect against breast cancer. Vitamin D is present in eggs, cold-water fish, and fortified products. A person can consult a doctor to check their vitamin D levels. If these are low, the doctor may recommend a supplement. Green tea may have several beneficial health effects. It contains antioxidants, and these may help strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of breast cancer. Turmeric is a yellow spice that may have anti-inflammatory properties that could limit the growth of breast cancer cells. Maintaining a healthy body weight is beneficial for well-being in general, but it is particularly important for people who wish to prevent the development or recurrence of breast cancer. Obesity is a known risk factor for the disease. Exercise is also important. According to a study, women who exercise for 4 hours per week or longer have a lower risk of breast cancer.
