One question which keeps ticking in many people's minds is as follows- Can Heart Attack Affect The Lungs? Well, the answer to this question is -” Weak heart can affect the lungs.” Let us check out the details about the connection between heart attacks and lung diseases. In this article, we are telling you about the kind of effects on the lungs due to heart issues and what diseases are caused by it.

A weak heart can affect the lung functioning

The weakening of the heart has a direct impact on the lungs. Heart failure also causes weak lungs and this may decrease the lung functioning capacity. Due to the weakening of the heart, the following diseases related to the lungs may occur.

  • Pulmonary Oedema
  • Pulmonary Thromboembolism
  • Pulmonary Embolism

Let us check out the details.

  • Pulmonary Oedema

Heart disease is a common cause of pulmonary edema. In this disease, the fluid accumulates in the lungs and this decreases the oxygen-carrying capacity of the lungs. To fulfill the oxygen-carrying capacity of various organs and tissues, the heart has to work harder to pump blood. This may affect the lungs and their functioning. The ability of the lungs to carry oxygen is reduced considerably. Pulmonary edema can cause various symptoms which are as follows -

  1. Cough
  2. Swelling of legs
  3. Breathlessness
  4. Exertional dyspnoea
  5. Complications like shock and damage to organs
  • Pulmonary Thromboembolism

Pulmonary Thromboembolism occurs when the heart is weak and blood clots begin to form in the lungs. This can cause difficulty in breathing and suffocation.

  • Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism restricts the flow of blood to the lungs. This may reduce the oxygen levels in the blood and this puts extra pressure on the pulmonary arteries. This blood clot from the long may get transferred from the lung to the other part of the body such as the arms or legs.

What to do to avoid heart-related diseases?

It is very important to get regular checkups from the doctor so that the effect of a weak heart does not affect your lungs and other parts of the body. To avoid heart problems, do not ignore any symptoms like shortness of breath, feeling very tired, headache, sudden low blood pressure, or high blood pressure. If you see any such symptoms in your body, then contact your doctor immediately.
