Debunk the common egg myths on this World Egg Day

October 8 is marked as World Egg Day and this day aims at celebrating and spreading awareness about its true benefits and bursting all misconceptions

We all are aware of the saying that an apple a day keeps doctors away, and the new one is ‘an egg a day will keep diseases at bay’. The egg is one of the most popular foods being consumed across the world and for the right reasons, it is also considered a superfood. October 8 is observed as World Egg Day. This day aims at celebrating this excellent superfood and spreading awareness about its benefits. People often discontinue eating eggs every day due to the common misconception that daily consumption of eggs may lead to an unhealthy rise in cholesterol levels. However, the American Heart Association dispersed this myth.

Benefits of eating eggs

Protein-rich: Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. Protein is considered as the building blocks of the human body; protein is an extremely essential nutrient that is often not consumed by humans in the right and required amounts. Protein is required by the body for the maintenance of cells, bones, and muscles. Eggs are excellent sources of protein and can help fulfil the protein requirements.

Benefits weight management: Eating eggs can improve metabolism that can be helpful in the process of weight management. However, one must be careful of the portion and preparation of eggs to ensure maximum benefits.

Boosts eye health: Eye health is degenerative in nature therefore it is important to take steps and to boost eye health for longevity. Eggs are a source of lutein and zeaxanthin which are healthy antioxidants for eyes.

Aids cellular health: Eggs are a good source of choline, a nutrient that is important for the cellular growth of the body. Apart from enhancing cell maintenance and DNA synthesis, choline can also help improve metabolism. 

Promotes heart health: Contrary to the popular belief that eggs cause a rise in cholesterol levels, eggs can help increase HDL or the ''good'' cholesterol. The American Heart Association (AHA) says that eating one egg every day can be extremely healthy for the heart and reduce the risk of various cardiovascular diseases.
