FDA approves Stratagraft for treatment of adults with thermal burns

FDA’s approval for Stratagraft is a very important move in the field of medicines which helps in providing a solution to the burn. The approval by FDA will help healthcare providers for a better approach for burn injuries

One of the most painful injuries experienced burns. When burn occurs to the skin, the nerve endings are damaged causing intense feelings of pain. Ins has to be extra cautious when it comes to pain and deal with care. Every year, many people are burned in many ways and experience this agonizing condition which is difficult to express by the patient of burns. Out of these, thousands of people die due to burning injuries. If you experience burn injury, there are high chances of long-term hospitalization which needs special care and attention. 

Burn injury causes and prevalence

Burns are the leading cause of unintentional death in many parts of the world. There may be many causes of burns however, higher causes are seen in automobile crashes and falls. Serious burns are complex and difficult to treat. Burn injury causes physical and emotional damage which makes it quite difficult to deal with patients. Burn injuries can affect the muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels. 

Burn injury does not only impact the skin but also the other systems of the body. The most important system in the body that gets damaged is the respiratory system which may possibly cause the construction of the airway, respiratory failure, and respiratory arrest. Since burn injury affects the skin, it may also impair the functioning of normal electrolyte and fluid balance. It also affects the joint causing damages to the bone, muscle, and ligaments. Patients may suffer from emotional and psychological problems that is one of the important aspects to address for the right recovery of the patient. 

Classifying burns 

Burns are classified in two ways depending on the degree of burn and the method of the burns 

Methods of burn 

Thermal-like heat from a fire, steam, and hot liquids  Chemical-like acids and caustics  Electrical - like current and lightning  Light - sunlight rays  Radiation- UV rays  

Degrees of Burns 

First Degree Burns: 

These are superficial injuries that include the burning of the outer layer of the skin.

Symptoms: 

Minor and common burn  Skin is reddened Extremely painful  The burn may heal in 3 - 5 days  Peeling of skin  is present  Temporary discoloration

Second-degree burns 

This involves the two layers of the skin epidermis and the dermis. The damage does not pass to the inner tissues or organs 

Symptoms 

Intense deep pain  Most tender skin  Redness and blisters  The mottled appearance of skin  It may not heal by itself and may need medical intervention  Healing takes place in 3 weeks. 

Third-degree burns 

This burn injury involves all the layers of the skin. These are included as full-thickness burns. 

Symptoms 

Burn injury is charred black  A third-degree burn is extremely painful  Some patients may feel no pain as nerve endings are completely damaged.  Medical and surgical intervention is required like skin grafting  Dense scars after the third-degree burns 

FDA approval for Stratagraft 

FDA has come up with the approval of Stratagraft which is a topical application placed by a healthcare provider. Over time, the patient’s skin cells should grow to replace the skin cells lost as a result of the burn. Treatment with Stratagraft can help avoid or decrease the amount of healthy skin that needs grafting. For many deep burns, skin grafting may be needed. However, this topical application, Stratagraft can definitely reduce the percentage of skin graft surgery.
