Hiccups in babies are not a matter of concern

“Babies usually get hiccups in their first year and most of the time it is not a matter of concern. We can try several ways to prevent hiccups like a pacifier, burping the baby.”

Hiccups do not normally harm a baby. But in adults, hiccups can make them uncomfortable. Babies generally do not suffer from this. One does not have to bother about the baby's hiccup but if it does not stop after a long time also, then you need to visit a doctor.

Hiccups generally are the reflex, that removes excess air from the stomach. Still many of us are unsure of the real reason behind hiccups. Hiccups cause the diaphragm to spasm and vocal cords quickly shut. Air is forced out through the closed vocal cords creating the sounds. The diaphragm is present at the bottom of the rib cage and runs across it. As we breathe it goes up to down.

Babies usually get hiccups after or during feeding. This can be because of overfeeding and inhalation of too much air. This process causes baby’s stomach to expand. As it expands, this pushes against the diaphragm thereby causing spasms that lead to hiccups. If this happens often and causes distress, then this can be a result of the Gastroesophageal reflex (GER - undigested food and stomach acid comes back through food pipe). There may be unknown reasons for these hiccups other than feeding or stomach problem.

Here are some tips to stop babies hiccups -

Rub the babies back – Rubbing their back and shaking them can help them to relax. It helps in stopping the spasm that causes hiccups.  Burp the baby – Take a break while feeding and burp the baby, this might reduce the air in the stomach. Thus, prevents hiccup. Gripe water – It is a mixture of herbs and water. It is used to treat stomach problems. It contains ginger, fennel, cinnamon as herbs. Some people believe that gripe water is useful during hiccups if it is due to a problem with stomach. However, no scientific theory proves this. Using a pacifier – Sucking a pacifier may help to reduce hiccup.

We can prevent hiccups by – Feeding babies in small amounts, feeding them before they become hungry, making the baby sit in an upright position after the feed.

People usually jump, pull their tongue, or sip a little amount of water to get rid of hiccups. These are home remedies that we usually try and have no scientific basis. But it is a bad idea to try these remedies on a baby. They can make the baby uncomfortable and sometimes even dangerous.
