How important milk is for a child’s diet?

Milk has numerous health benefits for the growing child, teenager, or adult. It contains essential nutrients and vitamins required for healthy growth. But don't forget the mantra of moderation. Excessing anything is bad for your health.

Since ancient times, milk has always been a part of the daily diet for any age group. But in recent years, we are seeing children, as well as adults, refusing the health benefits of milk owing to various research studies. Milk has numerous health benefits, children (growing age) denying milk are inviting various health-related problems. Milk is very much essential for the growth and nutrition of an infant, child, or teenager. Just like the mother's milk tends to be the Raksha kavach (immunity) to a newly born child, the same way the dairy milk is as significant as mother’s milk for a growing child.

One cup of whole milk contains –

  • Water- 88%
  • Calories – 149
  • Carbohydrate – 11.7 gms
  • Protein – 7.7 gms
  • Sugar – 12.3 gms
  • Fat – 8 gms

Calcium – It is required for bone health and teeth. Sufficient calcium consumption in the body decreases the risk of bone and other related diseases. People with insufficient calcium levels in the body are at increased risk of bone fractures. Milk is the prime source of calcium and people with lactose intolerance can opt for other sources of calcium.

Phosphorus – Along with calcium and vitamin D, phosphorus is essential for good bone health. It regulates the utilization of fats and carbs. It helps the body in synthesizing protein.

Potassium – It has importance in balancing fluid, muscle contraction, and blood pressure. Its deficiency may cause muscle cramps and unstable BP. This also helps in the prevention of kidney stones, water retention, and stroke.

Protein – Two types of protein are found in milk, insoluble milk protein called casein and soluble one is whey protein. Both these proteins are full of essential amino acids and can get easily digested. Casein helps in absorbing calcium and phosphorus from food that is consumed and whey protein helps in lean muscle mass.

Vitamin A – Vitamin A is very important for the eyes and their normal functioning. It supports a healthy immune system.

Vitamin D – This vitamin is important for absorbing calcium from the food we intake and also maintains phosphorus levels. Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D hence also called sunshine vitamin.

Vitamin B complex

Moderation is the key to good health. Don't consume anything in excess (milk), it can interfere with iron absorption and can lead to obesity. Instead, try low-fat dairy milk. You can add several flavors to the milk like nuts and seeds. This makes it even more healthy and tasty for children. Do include a glass of fresh milk in your child's daily diet for healthy growth and nutrition.
