India records a surge in numbers though the recovery rate has improved

India reported the highest single-day jump in the total number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) patients on Wednesday with 5,611 new cases within the last 24 hours, taking the country’s tally to 106,750, Union health ministry said.

The number of deaths has also gone up after 140 Covid-19 patients died due to the respiratory illness, between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, consistent with the health ministry’s dashboard at 8am. So far, 3,303 people have died.

The recovery rate now stands at 39.62% as 42,297 people recovered from Covid-19, as declared by the Health Secretary,Lav Agarwal.

According to GOI,India has been relatively able to decelerate the pace of COVID-19 and the impact can been seen in the data of COVID-19 cases. Compared to the global scale, where there are 62.3 cases per lakh, India still has only 7.9 cases/ lakh population. Similarly, for mortality per lakh population, while the global average rate is 4.2, India’s figure is pegged at 0.2. The relatively low death figures represent timely case identification and clinical management of the cases.

The focus on clinical management and recovery has resulted in the improvement in the recovery rate. More than 39.6 % of the confirmed cases have recovered bringing the total to 42,298 recoveries, as of today. This is a reminder that the disease is curable and the clinical management protocols adopted by India are effective. It is observed in the recovery data that about 2.9% of all active cases under management require Oxygen support; about 3% of the active cases under management require ICU support and 0.45% of the active cases under management require ventilator support. India has concurrently been focusing on upgrading COVID dedicated health infrastructure.

In other news,Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that during today’s Cabinet meeting, important decisions were taken which are focused on welfare of migrants, poor, senior citizens, easier availability of credit, harnessing opportunities in the fisheries sector.

In a tweet, Mr Modi said, the decisions will benefit several citizens. He said, the important Cabinet decision on scheme for formalization of micro food processing enterprises will contribute to a vibrant food processing sector and will also strengthen the efforts towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The Prime Minister said, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana will revolutionize the fisheries sector and will invigorate it with latest technology, infrastructure and ensure financial assistance.

He said, our hardworking fishermen will gain immensely from it.
