The United Nations General Assembly designated 1 October as International Elderly Day on 14 December 1990. Earlier, the Vienna International Plan of Action on Aging was an initiative adopted by the World Assembly in 1982 and supported by the United Nations General Assembly in the same year.

International Day For Older Persons 2022: History

On 14 December 1990, 1 October was declared the International Day of Older Persons by the United Nations General Assembly. The Vienna International Plan of Action on Aging, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly later that year and the World Assembly on Aging in 1982, was one of the first initiatives.

In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons (Proposition 46/91). In 2002, the Second World Assembly adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action to respond to the opportunities and challenges of aging in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages. The composition of the world's population has changed dramatically in recent decades. 

Between 1950 and 2010, life expectancy around the world increased from 46 to 68 years. There were 703 million people aged 65 or over globally in the year 2019. The region of East and South-East Asia was home to the largest number of older individuals (261 million), followed by Europe and North America (over 200 million). Over the next three decades, the number of older persons worldwide is projected to more than double, reaching over 1.5 billion individuals in 2050.
