Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Thursday hinted that fresh Covid-19 restrictions could be introduced from April 2 as the city recorded its highest ever single-day spike of 8,646 cases.
Mumbai on Thursday reported 8,646 new coronavirus cases, its highest one-day rise since the outbreak of the pandemic as Mayor Kishori Pednekar hinted that some restrictions could be introduced in the city from April 2.
Mumbai's overall caseload now stands at 4,23,360.
The death of 18 patients during the day, the highest single-day figure since the first week of December last year, took the fatality count to 11,704.
As 5,031 people got discharged from hospitals during the day, the recovery count jumped to 3,55,691, the BMC said.
Mumbai's Covid-19 recovery rate is now 84 per cent.
The infection growth rate has worsened to 1.38 per cent and the doubling rate has dropped to 49 days.
There are 80 active containment zones in the city, where 650 buildings have been sealed to curb the spread of the virus.
MUMBAI MAYOR HINTS AT FRESH CURBS
Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar suggested that fresh Covid-19 restrictions could be imposed in the city to curb the fresh Covid-19 wave.
She said that hotels could be asked to operate at 50 per cent of the seating capacity and religious places might be shut completely as "people do not listen"."Train journey might be restricted to only essential services staff only as in the past," the mayor said, adding that malls, theatres may also be shut considering that people don't follow Covid-19 norms.
Mayor Pednekar also said that private offices could be asked to operate in two shifts.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra broke all Covid-19 records on Thursday as the state reported 43,183 new Covid-19 cases -- the highest-ever single-day spike in the state since the start of the pandemic.
With this, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra has risen to 28,56,163.
The state also recorded 249 deaths related to Covid-19 taking the death toll in Maharashtra to 54,898. The case fatality rate in the state is 1.92 per cent at present.
