Medical Contribution by Indians

For years, India had a high reputation in medical sciences. Here's a list of few contributions made by Indians in the field of medicine.

In the ancient world, India had always commanded respect in the field of medicine. For years, India had a high reputation in medical sciences. Indians were able to detect and diagnose many diseases during that time. Ayurveda and its wisdom helped many prevent diseases and also cure them. Dating back to the 1st millennium BC, Ayurveda was heavily practised at the time. Charaka Samhita was the first person to compile Ayurvedic principles. Remedies for better immunity, digestion, metabolism were presented. Using spices and herbs in food wan an Ayurvedic way to combine preventive medicine in everyday life. 

Here’s a list of developments that Indian contributed to the world - 

1. Surgery 

Susruta an Indian surgeon is the Father of Surgery. He wrote a book Susruta Samhita where he mentioned more than 300 surgeries ranging from bones, tissues and even organs. The book also held account for 120 surgical instruments of his own creation. 

2. Cure of Leprosy

Suffering Leprosy in the earlier times was considered the curse of the devil. But soon the disease found its cure in India. There is much debate around the first mention of cure. Some believe the cure was found in Susruta Samhita while some claim the cure to come from Arthaveda.

3. Cure of Black Fever

Black Fever or Visceral Leishmaniasis was deemed as the disease of the poor. In 1929, Upendra Nath Brahmachari found the cure for the disease and helped eradicate the disease throughout the world. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of Urea Stibamine.

4. Permanent Eye Colour Change

One of the biggest breakthroughs of 2012, was performed by Dr Shibu Varkey. He performed a permanent eye colour change in Trichy. The colour can change into blue, green or grey of various shades. This happens by inserting implants in front of the eye that changes the colour of the iris.
