Depression in senior citizens is more because of loneliness than illness

▴ Depression in senior citizens
According to government figures, India has 103.9 million elderly, which is 8.5% of the total population.

Ageing takes a toll on mind and body. There is memory black-out, there is loss of hearing, there is lack of occupation. The social interaction reduces, and physical endurance diminishes. This can push a senior citizen into isolation, loneliness and then into depression.

It is estimated that 1-2% of the elderly in India suffer from depression. Their emotional needs are often overlooked, even by medical experts. Most elders are unable to share their thoughts and feelings with the youngsters, resulting in depression which goes unnoticed.

Here are some signs and symptoms to watch out for.

Sadness, fatigue, loss of interest in hobbies Social withdrawal and isolation Loss of appetite, weight loss Loss of self-worth Thoughts of suicide Loss of interest in personal care

Following are a few ways to deal with the problem.

First, get medical intervention. Psychiatric treatment works best in such situation. Second, ensure the elderly eats healthy. It’s of vital importance at any age. Third, encourage the person to get involved in the world around. Engage them in discussion, and seek their opinions. It will make them feel relevant. Four, have children around. They will connect well with them and their time will pass easily.
