National Toothache Day: 5 dental problems that cause toothache

Since toothaches can be excruciating, let's start taking better care of our oral health on National Toothache Day.

National Toothache Day is observed annually on February 9. It is observed to remind us to take care of our oral health. Toothaches are a common ailment these days. Toothache is caused by a variety of factors, including tooth decay and gum disease. Understanding the causes of toothache might help us in taking care of our oral health.

Facts:

In India, about 85% to 90% of adults have dental cavities, along with about 60 to 80% of children.

Different oral conditions such as untreated caries of permanent teeth, untreated caries of deciduous teeth and severe Periodontitis have a significant burden affecting 43.2 crores (32%), 11.2 crores (8.3%) and 18.1 crores (13.3%) people in India.

Causes of toothache:

There are various dental problems that lead to toothache.

Tooth decay - Tooth decay is also known as dental cavities. It occurs when bacteria form a film, called plaque, on the surface of teeth. The bacteria produce acids from the sugars in food. The acid then permanently damages the outer layer of the tooth. You can prevent the tooth decay by regular brushing and flossing.

Gum disease - Periodontitis is commonly known as Gum disease. It is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and, without treatment, can destroy the bone that supports your teeth. Common symptoms are red, swollen and bleeding gums.

Cracked or Broken Teeth - Cracked or Broken Teeth is often caused by injury or chewing hard foods. You should get it checked regardless how bad you think the crack is as soon as possible.

Receding gums - Gum recession is the process in which the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away, or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth, or the tooth's root. The gaps or "pockets" form between the teeth and gum line, making it easy for disease-causing bacteria to build up.

Enamel erosion - Enamel erosion is a condition that develops very slowly and leaves teeth both discolored and rounded-looking. Its primary cause is consuming plenty of sugary and acidic foods. However, you can greatly reduce any further enamel erosion by cutting back on sugary and acidic foods.

All of these dental problems lead to toothache which can be very painful and taking care of your teeth and maintaining oral hygiene will prevent all dental problems.

Things to start doing this National Toothache Day:

Regular brushing and flossing - Brushing and flossing twice a day reduce the risk of dental problems.

Learn how to care for toothache - Rinse your mouth with saltwater and put icepack on cheek to numb the area to reduce the pain.

Regular dental check-up - Scheduling regular appointments with the dentist twice a year will prevent dental problems from becoming severe.
