Predict and Prevent diseases with DNA - National DNA Day '22

The human DNA holds the entirety of the person's life. Let's know more about this double-helix shaped element on this National DNA Day.

The human DNA holds the entirety of the person's life. Our DNA is the guide on which we develop, survive and thrive. Made up of many elements, DNA holds great importance in a human’s life. From the colour of our hair to the diseases we’ll suffer, DNA has all this information coded in itself. of the human. Science is usually filled with jargon which makes many people lose interest in it. But there are many ways in which science and all its mysteries can be accessed in an interesting way.

The best day to start unravelling the mysteries of the DNA is today, 25th April. National DNA Day is celebrated by the National Genome Research Institute. Let us begin knowing and learning more about DNA.

About National DNA Day

National DNA Day is celebrated by the United States on April 25. On this day in 1953, molecular biologist James Dewey Watson’s paper first showcased DNA’s double-helix structure. This was a revolutionary breakthrough.

DNA is a material that carries all the genetic information about how a living organism will look and function. For instance, DNA in humans determines such things as what colour the eyes will be and how the lungs will function. Each piece of information is encoded in a different section of the DNA.

What in layman’s terms is called DNA, is actually Deoxyribonucleic acid. This hereditary material is found in humans and all organisms. Every cell in a person’s body has DNA.

The information in DNA is stored as a code map made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C) and thymine (T). Human DNA consists of about 3 billion bases, and more than 99% of those bases are the same in all people.

How accurate are DNA tests?

DNA tests can be done by using cheek swabs or blood tests. You must perform the test in a medical setup if you need these results for legal reasons. A DNA paternity test is 100% accurate in determining whether a man is another person's biological father or not. DNA testing process, the chance of something being wrong or misleadingly inaccurate is less than a 10% chance.

This National DNA Day let us appreciate the wonder and creation of god. The field of science is speedily learning more about DNA. This has led to an emerging field of genomics. With this technology, predicting and preventing diseases will become easier. Thereby saving countless lives.
