Ultra growth of Ultrahuman

▴ Ultra growth of Ultrahuman
Within two years, Ultrahuman has raised over $24 million in funds. Will this health-fitness startup be able to give competition to Apple and Samsung on their own turf?

Runnr was a hyperlocal logistics company acquired by Zomato in 2017. Their fortunes doubled when Runnr’s co-founder, Kumar, was made the COO of Zomato’s Food Delivery. Despite their good fortune the duo, Mohit Kumar and Vatsal Singhal left their success at Zomato to carve their new success with Ultrahuman.

Ultrahuman brings in one app for all your fit and healthy lifestyle. The app studies your metabolism and suggests lifestyle changes accordingly. It has earned high ratings on both the Apple App Store and Google Play store. It is an advanced metabolic health and fitness app that improves your health based on the app’s biomarker-based feedback loop. From personalized fitness sessions, meditations to diet monitoring all aided with bio tracking. It includes celebrity and renowned athletes like Kara Saunders, Amanda Cerny, and more. In a collaboration with Visa, Ultrahuman has created a membership for Visa cardholders that gets them membership for Rs 2499.

In their maiden funding round in December 2020, Ultrahuman raised $7.5 million from Nexus Venture Partners ($5.8 M) and Blume Ventures ($1.7 M). Other participants were Gaurav Munjal, Adit Parekh and Nishith Rastogi. In its last funding round, the two-year-old company raised another $17 million. Alpha Wave Incubation led the round closely followed by Steadview.

Ultrahuman has made big strides in a couple of years. But a dilemma plagues Ultrahuman as their user base shows a deep divide. Unlike streaming platforms or e-pharmacy, customer loyalty in fitness apps is of utmost importance. As people are not likely to constantly switch to different platforms for their fitness.

80% of its users reside overseas, where giants like Apple and Samsung have entered the tech-fitness arena with Apple’s Fitness+ and Samsung’s Smart Trainer. Apple uses its Watch to track the users’ heart rate and other essential metrics. Samsung is going to use its smart TVs to track the users’ exercise. Ultrahuman’s other competitors include Super Sapiens and Levels Health. When it comes to India, Ultrahuman has no strong competition.

Should Ultrahuman try and retain their overseas users or search for a new market in India?
