West Bengal is on alert due to a sharp rise in Adenovirus infection

After the death of 2 children caused by Adenovirus, West Bengal is on alert and doctors are advised to be watchful. Let's learn more about the Adenovirus Infection.

News has reported In West Bengal; there is a rise in adenovirus cases. Health professionals in Kolkata have been instructed to be more watchful and alert about flu-like symptoms in children. Also, the state health department has issued a warning asking people to stay away from crowded areas and to use masks.

Paediatric intensive care units (PICU) in most hospitals are currently occupied with infected children. Hospital wards across the state are filled with children suffering from respiratory infections mostly caused by adenovirus infection, The Times of India reported.

What is Adenovirus?

Adenoviruses are a group of viruses that causes mild cold or flu like illnesses. Adenovirus infections can happen in kids of any age. Researchers found about 50 types of adenoviruses that can infect humans. These viruses don't have any seasons like other viruses. Adenovirus is also contagious.

Signs and Symptoms of Adenovirus:

Adenovirus infection symptoms vary depending on the type of virus and the area of the body it has infected.

  • Cough
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Vomiting
  • Ear infection

What diseases do Adenoviruses cause in kids?

  • Pink eye
  • Bronchiolitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Croup
  • Gastroenteritis

How Adenovirus spreads?

Adenovirus is highly contagious. It spreads through touching, shaking hand, hugging. Virus can spread through respiratory droplets from sneezing and coughing, released in air. After touching contaminated surface or objects, you can get the virus by touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing hands. Fecal material (poop) can spread the infection through contaminated water, dirty diapers and poor hand washing.

Treatment:

Well, currently there are no approved medicines or specific treatment. Some types of Adenoviruses can be managed by treating symptoms with over-the-counter medicines and rest.
