Yoga for gut health

A healthy digestive system is important for living a healthy life. And the secret to a healthy digestive system is a healthy gut. Improper gut health can result in several illnesses

A healthy lifestyle is very helpful for a healthy gut and it can act as a preventative measure for many illnesses. Let’s see how yoga can benefit our gut

Aasans good for your gut

Surya namaskar – This helps in stimulating digestive fire. Inhalation and exhalation of breath produce heat in the abdomen, eases detoxification and digestion.

Shavasana – This pose is perfect for reducing stress as it activates the parasympathetic nervous system and keeps your gut happy and stress-free to restore balance within the rest of the body.

Parvrtta anjaneyasana – During this pose, because of the twist, pressure is applied on the organs, this aids digestion. The digestion process of fluids and food simplifies along with the release of toxins and elimination of waste.

Dhanurasana – This provides massage to the internal organs by moving forward and backward while resting on the belly. This improves blood flow, oxygenates, and revitalizes the digestive system.

Mayurasana – It is considered the best detox pose. It places pressure and cuts blood flow to the stomach, liver, intestines, kidneys, and spleen. Apart from increasing the digestive fire, it also reduces the production of toxins in the intestine thus improving digestive function.

Foods good for your gut

Prebiotic foods – These foods are rich in fiber. Prebiotics and probiotics work synergistically to help our gut microbes flourish and diversify. Some of the examples include onion, oats, bananas, raw garlic, apple cider vinegar.

Fresh herbs – They have anti-inflammatory properties, increase the diversity of gut flora. Bitter herbs release digestive enzymes that promote digestive health. Examples – Coriander, peppermint, dandelion root.

Coconut oil – It has antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal properties. Thus it helps in killing harmful bacteria and helps restore your stomach pH level.
