7 Tips for a Healthier Morning

Routines are established for the days when you don't feel your best, not for the days when you feel great. Healthy habits increase the likelihood that your body will heal more quickly and experience fewer illnesses overall.

Do you enjoy getting up early? Some of us always seem to wake up feeling exhausted and lethargic no matter how early we go to bed the night before. Following are some suggestions for a healthy morning routine that will leave you feeling energised and prepared for the day.

Naturally awaken

Go to sleep with the blinds or curtains partially open as this can help you feel better in the morning. By doing this, you will gradually become awakened by the rising sun, and if you can maintain this routine, you might find that you can consistently get out of bed in the morning without the use of an alarm clock.

Exercising or stretching

Exercise right after you wake up can help you focus, have more energy, and feel better all day long, even though it may be difficult for some people to get up early enough to fit in a healthy morning run or bike ride.

Prioritizing water over coffee

The first thing that many of us drink in the morning is a cup of coffee. It can be very easy to get sidetracked and only drink coffee until well into the afternoon when you have a busy day ahead of you. Prior to starting to hydrate your body with additional healthy beverages, make sure you take care of your basic health. Even fruit juice, soda, and other sweet drinks are poor substitutes for water. Drink a large glass of water first thing in the morning before making yourself a cup of coffee. Drink plenty of water because dehydration can affect your mood, productivity, and focus.

Stay away from the snooze button.

Since those extra few minutes of sleep don't give you the kind of restorative sleep you need, hitting the snooze button has been shown to be more detrimental than beneficial. This may cause you to be more sleepy in the morning and prevent your body from releasing wake up at the same time every day. As painful as it may be on some mornings, once you hear that alarm, do your best to get out of bed.

Reduce your morning stressors

Try to make as few decisions as possible before you leave for the day to make your mornings easier. A good place to start is by organizing your outfit the night before and cleaning up any areas of your home that you might feel compelled to clean the following morning. The ideal situation is to be able to simply wake up, get ready, and leave without rushing or making pointless decisions.

Limit electronics

It can be alluring to open your laptop to check your email, Facebook, or the news to start your day, but doing so can unintentionally disrupt your morning and, by extension, the rest of your day. Instead of using your computer as soon as you wake up, try doing something more interesting and active, like writing in a journal for ten minutes or listening to motivational music.

Sleep Well

  • Do your best to clear your bed and eliminate clutter
  • Limit electronics before bed (phones, TV, computers; everything!)
  • Do something relaxing before bed (reading for 15 minutes, meditating, or listening to relaxing music)
