The pandemic has made the importance of mental health stronger than ever. Never before would we have understood anxiety in such a better way than we understand it now. Many questions have started swirling in our minds.

Mental health problems

Mental health problems are also becoming the next major concern for the World Health Organization (WHO).

According toWHO, this pandemic has really tightened its grip on our mental health. Unfortunately, there can be a rapid increase in cases of anxiety and depression around the world, especially in the coming days. Hence, it becomes even more necessary to be aware to deal with this situation in a better way.

Due to a lack of correct information or lack of knowledge, people try to deal with their anxiety problems through solutions like sleep or diet. No doubt it helps to an extent. But sometimes we end up consuming such things, which make it worse instead of managing the problem. Want to know how? So read on-

You may be shocked to hear this, but the truth is that anxiety and depression are linked to the health of our gut. So as long as our stomach is healthy, our mind is going to be happy and calm.

Our gut and brain are also intertwined. So whenever you feel anxious. So during that time, you start feeling many of its physical symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heavy breathing, and rapid heartbeat.

If your gut is healthy, then your internal defense mechanism is strong and you can easily fight off any kind of infection spread by viruses or bacteria.

Did you know that 90% of serotonin, which is a happy hormone, is produced in our gut?

Our gut includes many organs starting from our mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestine, etc. It is a very thin layer, which protects us from external infection. It acts like a gate or a resistor. And eliminates what is not necessary. At the same time, it keeps the nutrients necessary for our nutrition inside.

When this lining gets damaged, all the toxins and unwanted things can get inside, causing the problem of inflammation which can worry us a lot.

Here are two foods that can damage your gut and make you more upset:

Sugar

We all know that sugar is a sweet poison. Consuming too much sugar can have its harmful effects on our body. So when we give up sugar, we feel stressed. When we are feeling low energy in the body, we often eat sweet food. But sugar can weaken our body's ability to fight stress.

Sugar inhibits the secretion of cortisol (a stress hormone) in the brain, which makes you feel calm. When you eat sugar, dopamine (a feel-good hormone) is released, which lowers cortisol levels.

But the more sugar you eat, the more addicted you will become to it. You keep on consuming sugar every time you feel anxious or stressed. By doing this your brain stops releasing its dopamine.

Sugar also affects your mental health

It becomes dependent on sugar to feel calm. Sugar depletes the healthy and good bacteria in your gut and creates an imbalance. It increases inflammation in your body and can reduce anxiety.

Gluten

Gluten is a family of storage proteins found naturally in some grains such as wheat, barley, and rye. Due to the processing methods used nowadays, wheat is now causing problems to some people.

Simply put, the intestinal wall acts as a gatekeeper that determines what substances pass through the bloodstream and organs. Normally in the small intestine, there are small gaps between cells, called tight junctions.

If these become damaged or become too loose, they can cause bowel leakage. Due to which substances and organisms in the intestine can leak into the bloodstream, causing inflammation in the body. This is the happy hormone serotonin in the intestine.
