Binge-watching - A health hazard

The pandemic has made binge-watching the new normal for many of us. Here are 5 damages binge-watching does to us.

The pandemic has made binge-watching the new normal for many of us, especially for the age group of 15 and 35. But have you really thought about the effects it has on your mental and physical health? Binge-watching refers to the back to back viewing of TV shows and movies for a long stretch of time. Here are five harmful effects you will suffer if you continue to binge-watch often.

Eye Damage

Binge-watching by the very definition makes one exposed to a screen for a long period of time. This drastically increases our screen time which results in you getting tired and red eyes. If sufficient breaks are not taken in between then one gets develops refractive error and would need spectacles in the near future.

Sedentary Position

Binge-watching creates long periods of inactivity. Sitting or lying down can cause heart problems, lung function decline, blood clots, risk of obesity, decline in cognitive functioning and more. Diabetes, strokes, osteoporosis, anxiety, depression and high blood pressure can be caused.

Binge-eating

For many, the experience of watching is always accompanied by the experience of eating. Just like movies are incomplete without popcorn, binge-watching is incomplete without binge-eating. Many binge-watchers have started following unhealthy diets with large doses of junk food and sugary beverages. Arizona State University has researched that an increase in screen-time also increases unhealthy diet in people.

Sleeplessness

Sleep is an important aspect of our life. Our body rejuvenates and recharges while we sleep. It also helps the body to build its immunity system. As one binge-watches, the time meant for sleep gets declines. Also, if one then tries to purposefully sleep, they will suffer from insomnia. High screen time often results in a state of sleeplessness.

Loneliness

We, humans, are social animals. It is important for us to stay and engage with our friends and family. This can give us protection against mental health issues and help us make closer ties with others. With binge-watching on the rise, many are damaging their social connection. This lack of personal relationships can increase a person's severe loneliness.
