Causes, Spread and Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Dr. Pravin Govardhane informs that early detection is a must for prostate cancer to avoid future complications. He also says that timely and right line of treatment along with proper diagnosis is essential in case of 50+ years of age

Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that originates in the gland cells of the prostate. The prostate gland is found in only men. Prostate cancer is a common occurrence in men. The definite cause of this cancer is not known yet. But various studies have confirmed that family history, old age, and obesity can lead to this cancer. Symptoms include blood during urination, painful urination, blood in the semen, burning sensation while urinating, frequent urination, interrupted urine flow, and enlarged prostate.

Did you know 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime? About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older, and it is rare in men under 40. The average age of men at diagnosis is about 66. 

It is important for you to be aware of this problem of prostate cancer which will help you deal with it. One may have to undergo surgery or radiotherapy in the early stages and combination treatments like hormone therapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and bisphosphonate therapy in advanced stages.

All you need to know about prostate cancer 

Dr. Pravin says, “Prostate cancer is generally found in males. The prostate gland is a reproductive organ in males. This is not found in females.”

Causes of prostate cancer

Dr. Pravin says, “The causes of prostate cancer are- 

Age-related about 60 years or around 80 years Genetic causes or familial tendency Black race  Vitamin D deficiency Obese and overweight patient High-fat diet.”

Screening of prostate cancer 

Dr. Pravin states, “Prostate cancer is very common in India. There are many cases diagnosed at a late stage. There is a simple test through which prostate cancer can be diagnosed. Early detection can lead to a good recovery from prostate cancer. Advanced stage prostate cancer can be difficult in cases of recovery. Screening can be done in elderly age groups rather than the normal population. Serum PSA can be used for screening. Along with this - 

Physical examination by a specialist 
Warning signs related to urinary issues 
MRI 
Prostate biopsy 
Sonography 
PET scan to detect the stage of cancer.”

Spread of prostate cancer 

Dr. Pravin emphasizes, “Prostate cancer is generally diagnosed at an advanced stage. In the early stage, it is confined to the prostate gland and recovery is possible. However, in advanced stages, it may spread to other parts of the body. The common parts affected in the advanced stage of prostate cancer are - 

Bone cancer Spine cancer  Lung cancer  Liver cancer  Lymph nodes cancer.”

Recurrence of prostate cancer 

Dr. Pravin informs, “In the early stage, when cancer is confined to the gland, surgery can be done and it can be removed. However, a strong follow-up is a must during the first two years. There are high chances of relapse. In the case of an advanced stage, regular medicines with hormonal treatment are a must. Strong follow-ups are a must. Stepwise management and treatment give good control. Prostate cancer needs strong follow-up for 5 years. Hormonal therapy can help in leading a normal life. The reason for death is very low in case of prostate cancer.”
