Communicate with your child to help him face the trauma of surgery

The word surgery can send a chill down the spine of even a thoroughly matured and grown up person. Imagine how your child will feel when he  / she comes to know that he / she is going to be operated upon. Beginning from admission to discharge to recovery, everything can be traumatic for the young mind.

Following are some ways to help your child sail through difficult period.

First, be calm. Talk to the doctor about the procedure. Clear all your doubts about the pre and post-surgery issues.

Second, learn how to talk to your child about surgery. Many hospitals have brochures, colouring books and other aids.

Third, teach your child to communicate his or her needs. Tel him / her it’s ok to be scared and uncomfortable, and to express his / her feelings.

Fourth, help your child to avoid last-minute anxieties by packing the suitcase in advance. Pack his / her favourite blanket or teddy bear.

Fifth, take control even if it is an emergency. Even if you are rushing your child for surgery because of sudden illness or accident, take out time to talk to the child. Assure him / her that you are just round the corner.
