Food poisoning

Food poisoning affects millions every year. If acted promptly, this can be very well treated at home. Learn about signs and symptoms with effective home care treatment.

Food poisoning is the result of ingesting contaminated food. The food is usually contaminated with bacteria, parasites, viruses, or toxins produced by these germs. If any person eats or drinks this contaminated food, the poisonous toxins can cause inflammation of the gut, upsetting the stomach.

Symptoms

Stomach cramps (most common symptom)

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Chills with fever

Home remedies

Plenty of fluids should be taken by the patient to compensate for the lost fluid through vomiting and diarrhea. For this patient can be given electrolyte solution to replenish the body with fluids.

Avoid beverages with high sugar content.

Ensure complete bed rest for the patient.

When to visit the doctor

Most of the food poisoning cases recover within a few hours without medical attention. However, do visit the doctor if the condition does not improve or if you experience any of these food poisoning symptoms

1. Vomiting that lasts over one day

2. High fever

3. Blood in the stools or vomit

4. Severe abdominal pain

5. Fast racing heartbeat

6. Severe dehydration (little or no urine, dizziness, extreme thirst)

Tips to prevent food poisoning

Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating – This removes dirt, pesticides, chemicals and other infectious agents.

Cross-contamination of food can also occur. Therefore, thoroughly clean counters where the food is assembled or prepared.

Wash your hands before and after handling food – this prevents the spread of infection.

Foods should be thoroughly cooked especially raw meat, eggs, poultry.

Right after having a meal, all leftovers should be refrigerated immediately.

People with compromised immune systems should be a little more careful about all this. Example – Pregnant ladies, people on treatment of cancer therapies.
