This incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring food safety in educational institutions and the swift response of healthcare professionals in such emergencies.

In a concerning incident at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Bheemgal, 103 students were rushed to the Government General Hospital (GGH) Nizamabad late on Monday night. These students complained of stomachaches and vomiting after dinner, while an additional 47 students received first aid and were later discharged.

Immediate Response:

The health scare began after 220 students had their dinner, with 150 of them subsequently experiencing stomachaches and vomiting. KGBV staff acted swiftly, alerting the Medical and Health department officials. The affected students were initially taken to the Bheemgal government hospital, where they received immediate first aid.

Stabilizing Health Conditions:

However, 103 students did not respond to the initial treatment, necessitating their transfer to the GGH in ambulances. At the GGH, healthcare professionals managed to stabilize their health conditions. Dr. Prathima Raj, the superintendent of GGH, reassured us that there have been no new complaints, and all 103 female students are now in stable condition.

District Collector's Visit:
District collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu personally visited the GGH to inquire about the incident. He also interacted with the students and reviewed their health conditions alongside Dr. Prathima Raj and other duty doctors. The district collector expressed concern that the students fell ill likely due to consuming contaminated food and promised necessary actions against those responsible.

Investigation Underway:

In response to the incident, R&B Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy directed the collector to take strict action against the staff of KGBV who may have failed in their responsibilities. Additionally, a medical camp was arranged at KGBV Bheemgal to further assess and monitor the student’s health.

Ensuring Food Safety:

The District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO), M Sudharshanam, also took immediate action, visiting KGBV and setting up a medical camp. A preliminary report has been submitted to the collector after an inspection of the kitchen and dining hall at KGBV. A comprehensive report will be prepared once the lab results of food samples collected from the kitchen are available.

This incident underscores the critical importance of ensuring food safety in educational institutions and the swift response of healthcare professionals in such emergencies. The authorities are taking all necessary steps to determine the cause of the student’s illness and prevent such incidents from happening in the future
