The increasing incidences of ear pain can be due to allergies, viral infections, throat pain, changing weather and pressure. Try out these simple home remedies for effective results.

The incidences of ear pain are seeing an upsurge due to the change in weather, mixed temperatures, and increasing viral infections. Most patients with viral infections are generally complaining of ear pain also. Let’s know more about this.

Ear pain (otalgia) commonly occurs in children, but it can also happen in adults. Usually, the pain arises in only one ear, but sometimes it can appear in both ears.

Symptoms

  • Headache
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Jaw pain
  • Clicking or popping
  • Fussiness and irritability (in children)
  • Increased crying (in children)
  • Loss of appetite (in children)

Causes

Ear pain is often caused by a blockage in the eustachian tube, the passageway that extends from the middle ear to the back of the nasal cavity and the throat. When the eustachian tube is blocked, air and fluid can’t flow through the passageway, causing a build-up of pressure and pain.

Ear pain can be caused by scratching the inside of the ear with a finger, or cotton swab. Additionally, allergies, throat pain, changing weather, and pressure can also be the reason behind ear pain.

Home remedies for ear pain

Simple ear pain arising as a result of allergies or changing weather can be treated at home simply by trying various home remedies.

Cold or warm compress - Use a heating pad or wrap a few ice cubes in a towel and your compress is ready. You can also soak a clean washcloth in either cool or warm water, squeeze it out, and then put it over the ear where you have pain, for instant relief.

Saltwater gargles – Allergies or viral infections can sometimes cause ear pain. Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe your sore throat and ease your symptoms. Mix a tablespoon of salt in a glass of warm water, gargle, spit out, and repeat.

Garlic oil – Garlic has antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Put a few drops of garlic oil, this will help kill bacteria or viruses that might be causing ear pain. Place a piece of cotton over the opening of the ear to stop the oil from coming out.

Use of onion - Strain the liquid from 1 or 2 onions and apply a few drops to the ear.
