How does Smoking Affects The Brain?

Smoking affects the brain. It has a direct correlation with your mind. Take action before it's too late. Let us know in detail how smoking affects the brain

Smoking and mental wellness are interrelated. Do you know WHY? Well, quitting smoking is not easy. It requires great mental power and willpower. Also, smoking gives you a “high.” So, smoking has tremendous effects on the brain and hampers your mental wellness. Next time, when you go to smoke, think beforehand. Smoking and mental wellness go hand in hand. If ignored, smoking can have devastating effects on mental well-being.

What studies suggest for smoking and mental wellness?

There was a study published in November 2019, in the journal of Psychological Medicine which confirmed that smokers have nearly double chances and are more prone to depression and schizophrenia. It is a common belief that individuals with mental illness generally get inclined to smoke. This is mainly done to self-medicate.

Findings suggest that smoking causes more mental health risk

People are often not worried about smoking and take it very casually. Cigarette smoking is substance abuse that causes a lot of negative effects on physical and mental well-being.

It may affect the different organs of the heart which are as follows-

  • Cardiac health
  • Gastric disturbance
  • Lung health
  • Mental health
  • Skin health
  • Accelerated the aging process

Based on the research, it is confirmed that young patients in their teens and twenties are more affected by smoking issues which may lead to mental illness. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mental illnesses such as depression are the third most common cause of hospitalization for people aged between 18 - 44 years. Adults living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than healthy adults.

Quit Smoking - Cessation of smoking

We already know that people should not choose smoking because of the detrimental effects on physical health. The studies mentioned above show that smoking has detrimental effects on mental health. It is important to stress quitting smoking programs for a better life and future. Mental illness is related to smoking and individuals can quit smoking only with strong willpower and proper mental willingness.

Why does smoking contribute to mental illness?

Smoking directly creates a major impact on the likelihood of mental illness. One thought is that when you smoke and inhale the nicotine, it activates the receptor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine which eventually leads to the release of dopamine and serotonin. These are happy hormones that make you feel good and de-stress you completely. This dopaminergic system is heavily involved with schizophrenia, it is the nicotine on cigarettes that affects the brain and will contribute to schizophrenia.
