2,872 fatalities till today morning

India crosses 90,000-mark of Coronavirus cases and counts reach 90,927. Among this whopping number 53,946 still bears active infections, 34,108 have recovered, 1 migrant patient, and 2,872 fatalities.

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare defends that above 70 percent of novel coronavirus patients in India who succumbed to the infection, died majorly due to comorbidities.

The number of Coronavirus cases in India now has given an edge to China which has reportedly closed on 82,933 cases on May 16.

The data shows 30 municipal areas spread across 12 states, UTs accounted for 80 per cent of India’s Coronavirus cases and top health ministry officials called for a meeting on Saturday with senior officers and district magistrates from these areas. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Odisha are reporting a high number of cases. Maharashtra still the worst-hit state accounting for 30,706 cases and 1,135 deaths, alone.

As the country reaches the exit of Lockdown 3.0, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Health & Family Welfare has stated: “While the doubling time in the past 14 days was 11.5, but now it has improved to 13.6 in the last three days”. He further reveals that the fatality rate has fallen to 3.1% and the recovery rate has improved to 37.5%. He also added that (as of yesterday) there are 3.1% active COVID-19 patients in ICU, 0.45% on ventilators, and 2.7% on oxygen support. As of 17th May 2020, a total of 90,927 cases have been reported from the country in which 34,109 persons have been cured and 2,872 deaths had occurred. In the last 24 hours, 4,987 new confirmed cases have been added.

 Dr. Harsh Vardhan stated that while India sees a return to a New Normal, following simple hygiene measures like washing hands with soap or using sanitizers; not spitting in public; sanitizing one’s workplace, regularly touched surfaces like tabletops; always using face covers in public places, are a must. He said that physical distancing is the most potent social vaccine available to us and hence it was advisable to ensure ‘Do GazkiDoori’ while interacting with others and to limit social gatherings by opting virtual gatherings.
