Lung health – Foods to eat and to avoid

Lungs are vital organs of our body. Here is the list of foods that are good for lung health and further promote good respiratory health.

Foods that promote lung health

1. Healthy fats

Nuts – These are a good source of healthy fats. A bowl of nuts a day can lower the risk of cancer. Consuming walnuts can reduce the risk of cancer up to 50% as per the study.

Flax seeds – These contain omega 3 fatty acids and other significant minerals which show synergistic effects on respiratory health.

Salmon – It contains a high amount of omega 3 fatty acids that help in reducing high cholesterol effects on the body. This can be used in easing the symptoms of asthma as well. Not only does this promote lung health, but is also beneficial for cardiac health as well.

2. Anti-inflammatory spices – Foods that fight inflammation are very much beneficial for lung health.

Ginger – In herbal medicine, ginger is considered anti-inflammatory and useful in asthma. Ginger promotes smooth muscle relaxation in the airways of the lungs that make the breather easier.

Turmeric – It contains curcumin as its active ingredient. Curcumin possesses anti-inflammatory properties and has the same effects as that of ginger.

Garlic – It not only decreases inflammation but also possesses antiseptic properties, which further prevent infections.

Onions – Dry onions can be used as a seasoning. It reduces the body’s cholesterol levels which can boost the cardiopulmonary system.

Dried red chilly – It excites healthy secretions within the body that protect the mucous membrane. And lungs rely on this membrane tissue as the exchange of gases (CO2 and O2) takes place here. This can even slow down the spread of cancer.

3. Fruits and vegetables – These contain antioxidants. Antioxidants flush out the free radicals from the body which otherwise can cause genetic mutations, Therefore, they aid in the proper functioning of the organ system. Antioxidants containing foods also boost the body’s immune system. They include – oranges, green leafy vegetables, carrots, apples, pomegranate, berries, etc.

4. Beverages that are beneficial – 

Water – Our lungs and major organs need proper hydration to function properly. Therefore, we need to drink sufficient water in the right way (sit and drink water sip by sip).

Green tea – It has antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation in the lungs. They even guard lung tissue from the harmful effects of smoke inhalation.

Foods to avoid for good lung health

1. Dairy products and gluten can cause inflammation, so avoid them.

2. Too much salt is bad for your lungs as it causes water retention. Limit intake of salt.

3. Water is necessary but too much water can interfere with nutrient transport and electrolyte balance. Drink only sufficient water.

4. Avoid processed foods.
