Management of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) - Medicircle

Dr. Anita Gupta informs that PCOS is not a disease, it is a lifestyle disorder just like diabetes. With lifestyle modification, one can easily beat this disorder. Don’t be stressed. Keep up the positive attitude.

Dr. Anita Gupta is working as the Associate Director - Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Fortis La femme with over 35 years of experience.  Dr. Anita did her M.B.B.S and M.S in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from GSVM Medical College, Kanpur. She has been successfully performing advanced Gynaecological Laparoscopic surgeries and Hysteroscopic surgeries. She has a special interest in high-risk pregnancy management, and also cases of infertility.  She has also published many featured articles related to obstetric and gynecological care in leading newspapers and magazines like Times of India, Asian Age, Grihalakshmi, and many more.

Dr. Anita says, "In PCOS, due to hormonal changes, male hormone testosterone level increases in the female body that gives rise to excessive facial hairs, irregular periods, and problems in conceiving. There is no clear-cut cause for it, but studies suggest that there may be a genetic reason behind it. PCOS is not a disease, it is a lifestyle disorder and can get treated with lifestyle modification. These days especially after COVID, a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits have raised the proportion of this disorder."

PCOS – A lifelong condition

Dr. Anita expresses, "PCOS treatment is based on symptoms. If there is a hormonal disturbance, and physically there is no acne but weight gain, here we can give medicines for hormonal corrections. One has to be vigilant about themselves. We can fix the hormones but lifestyle corrections should primarily be the main objective."

Dr. Anita adds, “It can be a lifelong condition. Following an unhealthy lifestyle for a prolonged time can turn PCOS into a lifelong condition. If a woman has PCOS and is planning for babies, first we give medicine for PCOS correction, and then they naturally conceive. They just need to be extra careful during their pregnancy period for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby."

PCOS stress

Dr. Anita mentions, “Many times PCOS patients get stressed due to their body changes and weight gain. Since stress is also one of the major causes of PCOS, we take the help of Psychologists and Psychiatrists to deal with the mental stress of the patients."

High-risk category for PCOS

Dr. Anita stresses, "High-risk category for PCOS includes

1. Women following an unhealthy lifestyle

2. An obese or overweight women

3. If there is a family history of PCOS

Dr. Anita concludes, “If you notice any of the symptoms of PCOS, immediately consult a doctor for their advice. Don't be disheartened. Always keep a positive attitude."
