Commuting long distance daily adversely affects sleep

If you are working more than 40 hours a week and travelling more than 30 minutes each way every day, you are risking your health.

A Swedish study has found that people with full-time jobs, and having to travel long distance to reach workplace, are more likely to have sleep related problems and a sedentary lifestyle. There is a 25% higher risk of having inactive lifestyle and a 16% higher risk of sleep problems compared to those who work less hours and have travel time.

Sleep problems arise due to lack of time for indulging in stress busting activities and relaxation. Moreover, because of exhaustion from travel people are too tired to be physically active, the study says. Almost everyone’s daily routine is determined by their work routine including the time spend getting to and from their jobs.

Moreover people with longer work hours and long commuting are more likely to be overweight than those who worked or travelled less hours.
