Vitamin-D can cut fat and blood sugar in obese women

▴ Vitamin-D
A study has found that Vitamin-D deficiency increases blood sugar and fat in pre-diabetic and obese women.

A study undertaken by researchers from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Diabetes Foundation of India (DFI), has shown that consumption of Vitamin-D by obese and prediabetic women can help reduce sugar and fat levels in their blood.

During the trial obese and pre-diabetic women between 20 and 60 years of age were given Vitamin-D supplements. They reverted to normal glucose levels, and their body fat also showed a decrease. Whereas, the placebo sample without Vitamin-D supplements progressed to diabetes.

Women in India are prone to Vitamin-D deficiency since they are more confined to households, and have their body covered with clothes. Though India is exposed to adequate sunshine, the exposure amongst women is not enough.

While various studies in the past have shown that patients with Type 2 diabetes have lower levels of Vitamin-D, the new study assumes significance because it shows significant reduction of blood sugar levels for some pre-diabetic to reverse to normal levels.
