Symptoms, complications, and solutions for PCOS

Dr. Hetal Patolia informs about early detection of PCOS which is very important to keep reproductive health at optimum level. She further explains the symptoms and preventive measures to avoid PCOS and get it resolved at an early stage by consulting a doctor.

Dr. Hetal Patolia is a Gynaecologist in Ahmedabad having 25 years of experience in the field of practice. She has completed MBBS and MD in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from MP Shah Government Medical College, Jamnagar in 1994 and 1998 respectively. She is also a member of the Indian Member Association (IMA), The Federation of Obstetric & Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI), the International Menopause Society (IMS), and the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR).

Organs are affected by PCOS

Dr. Hetal Patolia says, “PCOS starts with ovaries where there is the formation of a cyst. But, if you check properly PCOS involves all the organs of the body including the -Skin at all other organs at all ages.”

Duration of delay in periods for PCOS

Dr. Hetal Patolia informs, “PCOS affects the rhythm of ovulation and it gets disturbed. Ovaries do not produce enough eggs regularly. In, PCOS, there is the formation of eggs, but they do not mature and rupture on time. This causes a delay of the menses which may cause periods to occur once or maybe twice a year. It may also get delayed by 1 -2 months. The delay of the periods is the main sign of PCOS.”

PCOS diagnosis at a certain age 

Dr. Hetal Patolia states, “PCOS can be diagnosed before even periods can occur depending on premenstrual changes like- 

  • Obesity 
  • Acne 
  • Delay in period 

The diagnosis of PCOD is done in adolescence age generally. PCOS should be diagnosed as early as possible to avoid complications. You can wait for 14 years of age .”

PCOS complications if untreated

Dr. Hetal Patolia informs, “PCOS is like diabetes which cannot be cured and keeps on increasing and it involves the other organs. PCOS should never be taken lightly and treated at an early age. If not treated at an early stage, it may cause reproductive issues and complications in pregnancy, higher chances of abortion, menopausal problems like BP, cholesterol, or blood sugar problems. It can also cause cancer such as uterine cancers.”
