SA-based HealthLeap raises $1.1 million in pre-seed round

South Africa-based healthtech startup HealthLeap has successfully raised $1.1 million in the pre-seed fund round led by investor Fifty Years. The startup provides clinical assistance to diagnose, prevent and manage nutritional changes in patients. Previously, they had received undisclosed amounts in pre-seed rounds in December 2020 and again in July 2021.

Malnutrition during a hospital stay is associated with 3-5x mortality and affects approximately 30-50% of patients. In a mere 5% of the cases is this diagnosed. HealthLeap wants to eradicate hospital malnutrition. In July 2021, they received USCDI approval.

The venture was started by clinical dietician Jemima Meyer along with Josiah Meyer and Ray Botha. Jemina felt overburdened due to the constant hospital rotations. She created a tool that could help her and her colleagues treat more effectively. Her brother Josiah was the product manager at Ray Botha’s asset management startup.

Right now they operate in the U.S but they plan to go global with their AI-based clinical assistant product called NutriLeap. NutriLeap’s mobile app is HIPAA-compliant that can help hospital dietitians with automated clinical calculations and research-backed suggestions. The app is being used by 50 dieticians while a 1000 more are on the wait-list.
