During lockdown, many of us spend most of our time watching TV, using mobile phones. Using them for a limited time is ok but excessive (unlimited) use of these can have many other severe complications. Although after unlock, the habit of sticking to mobile phones is still high. But do you, how your kids are getting affected by this? They are very curious to know what you are doing. They might be thinking of grabbing mobile phones or laptops from you. In that case, what should you do? Some of the apps have educational benefits, too much screen time can lead to eye strain and other health problems.

Screen time duration for children

Children under 18 months old - Should not be allowed any passive viewing screen time.

Children between 18 and 36 months - Should see only 1 hour of screen time each day.

Older kids - Can have some screen time, but still set limits.

How to manage kids screen time

Set rules for screen time – The rules should be set before allowing them to watch mobile or laptop. Make them understand the bad consequences of too much screen time.  Make sure they’re enforced consistently.

Keep an eye on it - Whether it’s a TV program or a game, parents should be involved as much as possible. You should always know what your kid is watching, or what game he’s playing.

Engage them in other alternative activities – Physical activity is also important for kids. Encourage them to go outside and play. Take your child for a walk in the park. You can also play indoor games, drawing, and mind games which can help build cognitive abilities in children. Including physical activity in the daily routine can help in building muscles and mass. Explain to them that there is a lot of fun in other activities, and not just in front of a screen.

No means No - Stay firm when it comes to controlling your child’s screen time. Children are creative and full of imagination. Help them explore their interests, hobbies, hidden talent in the form of drawing, writing, etc.
