▴ UK variant of Coronavirus feared to undermine protection given by vaccines against developing COVID-19
It was reported that the British variant, which is more infectious but not necessarily more deadly than others variant

The head of the UK’s genetic surveillance programme said, the Coronavirus variant first found in the British region of Kent is a concern because it could undermine the protection given by vaccines against developing COVID-19.

Sharon Peacock, director of the COVID-19 Genomics UK consortium, also said the variant was dominant in the UK and was likely to sweep the world, in all probability. She said vaccines were so far effective against the variants in the United Kingdom, but that mutations could potentially undermine the shots.

There are three major known variants that are worrying scientists: The South African variant, the so-called UK or Kent variant, and the Brazilian variant.

The British variant, which is more infectious but not necessarily more deadly than others, was likely to sweep the world, Peacock said. The two COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca protect against the main British variant.

Meanwhile, the Covid-19 recovery rate in the India has improved 97.32 per cent. Health Ministry said, in the last 24 hours 15,8,58 people were discharged. With this 1,05,89,230 have recovered from Covid-19.

In the last 24 hours, 9,309 new COVID-19 cases and 87 deaths were reported. With this total cases reached 1 crore 8 lakh 80 thousand 603. The death toll has touched 1 lakh 55 thousand 447. The active cases are now at 1,35,926. More than 75 lakh people have been vaccinated in the country so far.
