When do babies start hearing after birth?

When do babies start hearing after birth? How to determine if the child's hearing is fine and normal? Let us give you more details about it.

The answer to this question is simple. After the third month of birth, babies start smiling once they hear your voice and by the sixth month, they start looking back at you and responding to your voice.

It is believed that the ability to hear in a child starts from the mother's womb. For this reason, many mothers are advised to gently listen to light music during pregnancy. Sometimes the child also reacts to music. But after birth, the ability to fully hear begins within about a month.

When does a child respond to voice after birth?

The child starts responding completely to sounds from the third month. From birth to the third month, babies begin to respond to loud sounds. They start smiling after hearing your voice and also become calm when you speak. From the fourth to the sixth month, babies start moving their eyes towards the sound. They begin to differentiate between the sound of different people and start paying attention to the music. Babies from 7 months to 1 year respond to their name being called and begin to understand the difference in words from mother, father, grandfather, grandmother,  and other family members. Along with these some common words like no, yes, come here, and start reacting to it.

How to know if a child is hearing properly?

After the birth of the child, there are many such tests, by which it can be known whether the child is able to hear or not. If the pediatrician has any doubts, he or she may suggest some tests. However, a child who is in deep sleep may not be awakened by the sound of the doorbell or telephone. This is because children usually sleep more deeply than adults. It is wrong to consider this to be a low hearing ability.

When does a child's hearing loss become a state of concern?

The child's hearing is a concern because of the following reasons-

  • When the child does not respond to a loud sound.
  • Even after 6 months of birth, the baby does not respond to sound, nor does it turn its head towards the sound.
  • The child should does not look at you only when you are in front of his eyes or when you are speaking.
  • But even these reasons do not completely prove that the child cannot hear. It may be that the child has got an ear infection or his ear is closed due to a cold. All these reasons can also be temporary.

When can children's hearing loss be affected?

  • Due to genetic reasons
  • The mother has a viral infection at the time of birth such as herpes, measles, rubella, etc.
  • Preterm birth
  • Born with a congenital defect
  • Jaundice
  • Anterior Fontanelle infection

After birth, the child has the ability to hear and respond to some extent. But gradually this ability gets better than before. If parents feel that the child's hearing ability is not completely correct, then it is necessary to consult a doctor immediately.

If you feel that the child is unable to hear, then do not panic immediately, do not try any home remedy on the child without the advice of the doctor. Consult the doctor from time to time and keep getting examined.
