Why is sitting for long periods of time not good for the body?

Sitting for a long time can be harmful to the body. With everything going digital, many of us are confined to sitting at work or at home for long periods. This may have negative effects on the body. Let us check it out.

Some of us remain unknown about it as our work involves sitting for a long time. Negative effects of sitting for long time 

The negative effects of sitting for long time are as follows- 

  • Obesity 
  • Metabolic syndrome 
  • High blood pressure 
  • Diabetes 
  • High cholesterol 
  • Joint pains 
  • Reduced blood circulation 
  • Numbness and tingling 
  • Gastric problems with indigestion 
  • Constipation 
  • Back pain 
  • Mood swings 

There is a risk of increased cardiovascular problems, cancer, musculoskeletal problems, insulin resistance, gastric problems, depression and anxiety with long hours of sitting.  Excessive sitting for longer periods of hours in one position for extended time can cause major health problems in future. 

Research on sitting for longer period of time

As per research, it has been confirmed that people who sat for more than 8 hours had high risk of mortality levels which is similar to those who are obese or addicted to smoking. There were around 13 research papers which have proved and compared the difference between the effects of activity levels while sitting or standing on the body. It has also been found that many people who practiced around 60-75 minutes of intensive physical exercise like walking daily could counteract the negative effects of sitting. This research was done on 1 million people in many previous studies which was found to be relevant and true. 

Many researchers have proven that sitting time has minimal mortality effect for those who are active in life. 

Tips and tricks to avoid long hours of sitting 

Remember, moving more and sitting less promotes greater health. If you have an option, begin by just standing rather than sitting. It is important to figure out and how to walk in between working hours while sitting for healthy life. Here are some tips and solution on how to avoid long sitting hours- 

  • Stand up every 30 minutes instead of sitting down 
  • Keep your feet up on while phone or watching TV
  • Try standing at your workstation or desk by taking frequent breaks 
  • Get creative with some stretches while at work 
  • Take a walk with co-workers to discuss work 
  • If you are working from home, place your treadmill near your work desk
