The Right To Food Campaign : Alarming Levels Of Hunger Post Lockdown

The Right To Food should be treated as a universal right for every individual worldwide. The Government of India is coming forward and putting its best foot towards it. The main aim is to check the nutritional status of the people across the country to fight and protect themselves from this outbreak of a pandemic.

A “Hunger Watch” survey was conducted in the year September 2020 to check the situation of hunger in different parts of the country. It is important to analyze the problem of hunger from the root cause to come down to a solution. The “Right to Food Campaign” is a partnership with several organizations such as Hunger Watch to track the hunger problem across the country.

According to the key findings of a survey taken by the “Hunger Watch”, recent efforts taken by the Government of India have come to the light and definitely shown a remarkable difference in the economy of the country.

All about “The Right to Food Campaign”

The Right to Food Campaign in partnership with many other organizations has initiated the “Hunger Watch”, a rapid survey across the countrywide from mid-September to mid-October 2020. Let’s not forget the negative impact of COVID19 which has led to a fall in the economy of the country. Many people have lost their jobs in this pandemic which has led to low or middle-income groups suffering. The objective of the  Right to Food Campaign was to assess the situation of hunger among the vulnerable groups as well as to take local immediate action to support those who need help from a financial point of view.

Economy Revival is very important

All measures and indications show that an economic revival will take some time to make a definitive comeback. Support is required for this pandemic during the period of starvation. The effects of lockdown and the resultant economic crisis continue to impact the low and middle-income groups. The working sector should be given enough support while working from home. Remember, people are trying to control and protect themselves from the spread of coronavirus.

Since the lockdown, the Government of India has announced the Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Yojna and Atma nirbhar Bharat. The Government of India is putting their best efforts to support people countrywide and help battle various problems. These campaigns can definitely have a positive impact on the economy.

National Food Security Act

According to the National Food Security Act, low-income and middle-income groups are provided with sufficient grains for all their needs. Although, there is improvement in the current situation as compared to the situation in lockdown during April-May 2020. It still remains a concern around the country as the “second wave of COVID19” takes a toll worldwide. Widespread hunger continues even now, irrespective of the income levels. To cope up with reduced income and food insecurity, people have reduced their food consumption and compromised on food quality.

Malnourishment and poor nutrition can take a toll on health this pandemic

Given that Indian diets are known to be average in quality, such a reduction in food consumption during this pandemic has adversely affected the nutrition of the small children and elderly age group. Deprivation of food can cause a negative impact on health weakening the immune system and making it difficult to fight against infection.

Where does the “ Right to Food Campaign” come from?

The  Right to Food along with many other rights is already protected by national law. International experts like the United Nations Organization provide help and guidance on how to implement the programs to the different countries. It is important to note that there are many issues related to the food system like food insecurity, public health, and worker’s rights are some of the important issues.

Food should be treated as a human right

The Right to Food Campaign is the set of principles laid down by the government to help guide them on how to manage our country’s food system so that it works at its best for every person. It should focus on delivering healthy, fair nutrition and sustainable food which is a must for everyone. The Right of Food Campaign makes it clear that it is the Government's responsibility to do everything in their power to ensure the food systems are in the right place.
