Ginger: Health benefits and side effects

Ginger is a common ingredient in every kitchen. This spice is used in making varieties of dishes. Apart from its flavor, its medicinal properties are having numerous health benefits

Ginger is a common treatment for stomach upset. Evidence is there that it is helpful. In lab and animal research, ginger has been found to theoretically reduce inflammation, blood sugar, cholesterol. Ginger may protect against Alzheimer's disease and prevent blood clots. Evidence of human trials shows that ginger can lower blood pressure and blood sugar. There can be side effects in some situations.

Benefits – 

Improves digestion - Ginger has carminative properties. It stimulates the secretion of bile and certain gastric enzymes, which aids digestion. Consuming ginger or drinking ginger tea may bring some relief for people with dyspepsia or chronic indigestion. 

Help in weight loss - Ginger works to reduce inflammation, boost digestion, and suppress appetite. Consuming ginger water regularly can help you lose belly fat in just a couple of weeks. 

Helps fight arthritis - Ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce symptoms of arthritis. You may consume ginger for pain relief or to reduce swelling from arthritis.

 

Adverse effects

Reaction with some medicine – Certain medicines can react badly with ginger. Ginger can lower blood sugar and blood pressure without the use of any medication. It has the natural properties of reducing blood sugar levels. But for those using insulin or metformin for diabetes, prescription medicine may lessen the effectiveness. If you are taking medicine, always discuss the quantity to be taken with the doctor, or else your blood sugar may drop too low.

Pregnant women should be careful with ginger - Experts have some concerns that it may increase the risk of miscarriage especially if the dose is too high. Continuing the use of ginger by a pregnant woman is a matter of concern because the dose which corresponds to the danger is still unknown. On one side it is considered that ginger affects the sex hormones of the fetus and on the other, it is known to increase bleeding. It is claimed that ginger should be avoided at the time of delivery. It would be best to say that there is some disbelief in the use of ginger during pregnancy, so better to take a proper consultation with a doctor.

Effects of ginger with some medicine - Antihypertensive drugs when combined with ginger may reduce blood pressure to an extreme level. It can also cause cardiac arrhythmias. Take necessary advice for the use of ginger from your doctor, he will give you a perfect solution on how to consume ginger.
