Startups that make life of Thalassemia patients easier – Special Feature on World Thalassemia Day - 8th May

Thalassemia is a preventable genetic blood disorder in which the patient's body cannot make sufficient red blood cells (RBC) on its own and require red blood cell transfusion every 14 -21 days. Few startups are working to make life easier for such patients.

Thalassaemia has been affecting millions of people across the globe. A World Health Organization report states that there are more than 4 million Indians who are affected by thalassaemia which is a genetic disorder related to the blood. Either error or lack in genes that are responsible for producing haemoglobin in our body leads to this medical condition. The more the mutations in the genes, the severe the disorder gets.

Jagriti Innovations – The organization’s core competency is in conceptualization, design and implementation of cutting edge solutions for the healthcare sector particularly in the area of oncology, blood transfusion medicine, and hematology. It helps by providing complete support in the area of thalassemia care and have tied up with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) Centers in India, Italy and Pakistan. This Bangalore based startup has a tie up with Italy based Cure2Children Foundation and has developed a software platform to manage bone marrow transplants (BMT) which is the cure of thalassemia. The technology designed by Jagriti innovations makes BMT safer and affordable. Rajat Kumar Agarwal is the CEO of the organization.

Aruvant – It's a Biotech startup that is working in the area of gene therapy for β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease under the leadership of Vivek Ramaswamy and has come up with RVT – 1801 to treat these disorders. It is so far being considered the single clinical-stage gene therapy  to help in resolving problems of a severe health issue like thalassemia. Aruvant aims to bring hope to patients living with rare diseases by developing life changing and potentially curative gene therapies. Aruvant is part of the Roivant family of companies.

Initiatives like above certainly add a ray of hope for people suffering from thalassemia and make life brighter for them as well as their families.
