Tips to reduce swollen feet during pregnancy

Here are some tips and tricks to avoid swelling of feet or ankle during pregnancy

Swelling is very much normal in pregnancies owing to extra blood and fluids in the body.  The extra fluid retention is required to protect and soften the baby and give enough space for the baby to expand as the baby grows. This additional fluid is responsible for 25% of weight gain during pregnancies. Generally swelling is seen in the hands, face, legs, ankles, and feet. It is also called edema. It gradually increases with pregnancy.

Swelling can occur at any point of time during the whole period of pregnancy but is more common in the last trimester.

Swollen feet reasons

Standing for a long duration, A diet high in sodium or high salt intake, A diet low in potassium, Extreme heat / hot summer, Extended day of activity at work or home, Increased consumption of caffeine products

Tips to reduce swollen feet

1. Avoid standing for long periods.

2. Always rest your feet elevated.

3. Always wear comfortable-fitting sandals, try to avoid high heels.

4. Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight around your wrists or ankles.

5. Apply cold compresses on swollen areas.

6. You can do ankle-toe movements. This will help to improve blood circulation and lessen the swelling.

7. Stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water to flush out toxins, which will help to reduce water retention.

Diet modification for swollen feet

Minimize salt intake in the form of processed foods, papad, pickles (avoid taking extra salt during meals)

Include potassium-rich food like bananas, sweet potatoes to lessen swelling.

Swelling is common in pregnancies but if you are not able to cope with it or experiencing any other major problem along with this, then do not hesitate to contact your gynec/physician.
