3 Habits for a Healthy Kidney - World Kidney Day

Globally, 1 in every 10 individuals will suffer from the problem of chronic kidney disease or CKD. Learn the 3 habits that can help you and your loved ones gain good kidney health.

Globally, 1 in every 10 individuals will suffer from the problem of chronic kidney disease or CKD. The cases of CKD are on the rise and it is estimated that by the end of 2040, it will be the fifth main cause of death in the world. If this disease is not diagnosed and subsequently treated, then it results in death. This years’ theme for World Kidney Day is ‘Kidney Health for All’. And to achieve this, one needs to break open the barrier of knowledge. We at Medicircle will aim to bridge this deep knowledge gap by making kidney health-related information available for Indians to keep their bean-shaped paired organs safe and healthy.

Water and Hydration

We all have heard the importance of 8 glasses of water a day. But this advice is certainly true for keeping our kidneys healthy. Try and fill your day with at least 2 litres a day. If your lifestyle features outdoor activities, sport and exercise then the water intake should be increased. Those who have a history of kidney stones, should try and drink more water to help prevent the deposition of kidney stones.

Food and Nutrition

You are what you eat. Maintain a diet that is home-cooked as it would be less in salt, free of preservatives and fresh. Some foods that are especially beneficial for kidney health are fish, whole grains, cauliflower and cabbage. Berries like cranberry, blueberries and strawberries are very essential for good kidney health. Another advantage of following this diet is that it will help maintain and/or reduce your weight. Gaining weight can lead to many diseases like kidney disease, heart disease and even diabetes.

Lifestyle and Exercise

If you already suffer from high blood pressure then it can negatively affect the health of your kidneys. Lower your high BP by engaging in activities like running, sports or swimming. The other advantage of sports is that it helps boost your overall health. Make sure you avoid certain habits in life like drinking and alcohol. Quitting these 2 habits will not only help your kidneys but also help your overall wellbeing.
