What is atopic dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis is a form of eczema in which the skin gets irritated, red, dry, and bumpy. There are several types of eczema. The most common is atopic dermatitis. Many people consider atopic dermatitis and eczema as the same thing. 

Causes of atopic dermatitis

The cause of atopic dermatitis is a weakened immune system. As the name suggests “atopic” which means the cause is unknown. However, there may be triggers which are as follows- 

  • Stress 
  • Hormonal changes 
  • Dietary changes 
  • Excessive sweating 
  • Diaper rash in children 
  • Unhygienic conditions 
  • Low immunity 
  • Hypersensitive immune system to allergens 
  • Pollen, dander, dust 
  • Winter and cold weather may cause dryness 

Atopic dermatitis is noncontagious.

What are the signs of atopic dermatitis?

The signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis are-

  • Dry skin 
  • Itchy skin 
  • Rashes
  • Scaly skin 
  • Swollen skin 
  • Inflamed skin 
  • Itchy blisters 
  • Watery discharge

Flare-ups are very common with atopic dermatitis. It is more noticeable at night.

Symptoms may vary depending on age-

For infants- younger than 1 year - atopic dermatitis is present on the cheeks, forehead, and scalp

Older kids and teens- atopic dermatitis present on the bend of the elbow, behind knees and neck, inner wrists and ankles. The skin is drier and the scalp may thicken over a period of time with lichenification. 

Treatment of atopic dermatitis 

The treatment for atopic dermatitis is as follows-

  • Stay away from allergens 
  • Avoid sun exposure 
  • Avoid dehydration 
  • Avoid unhealthy outside food 
  • Switch to gentle soaps 
  • Change the detergent clothing powder
  • Use topical ointment 
  • Take antihistamine for itching
  • Use soothing aloe vera gel 
  • Moisturize with coconut oil  
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines
