In a significant step towards promoting public health, the district administration in Palnadu has initiated the Bangaru Thalli scheme to combat anaemia. Anaemia, often caused by iron deficiency leading to low haemoglobin levels, is a prevalent concern, especially among adolescent girls. The scheme aims to address this issue through regular monitoring, awareness programs, and nutritional support.

A recent ground-level survey conducted by district ICDS officials revealed that a considerable number of girls under the age of 15 were identified as anaemic. Disturbed by these findings, District Collector Sivashankar Lotheti, in consultation with experts, introduced the Bangaru Thalli scheme to tackle anaemia systematically.

Implementation: The key component of the scheme involves conducting monthly blood tests for students to assess their haemoglobin levels. The recorded readings are then documented on progress sheets, which include additional details such as screening dates, height, weight, and haemoglobin percentage. The categorization ranges from normal (more than 12 gms), mild (10gm to 11.9 gm), moderate (8gm to 9.9 gm), to severe (less than 8gm). This categorization helps in closely monitoring improvements and taking necessary actions.

Monitoring and Action: The officials responsible for the scheme will closely monitor the progress and take appropriate actions. This includes ensuring the provision of nutritious meals at government schools and distributing Iron and Folic Acid (IAF) tablets, essential for preventing anaemia.

Awareness and Education: To enhance awareness, progress reports also contain details about the symptoms of anaemia, nutritious foods to be consumed, and preventive measures. Additionally, awareness programs targeting parents emphasize the importance of a balanced diet and specific nutritional requirements for girls aged between 10 and 19.

Interdepartmental Collaboration: Collaborative efforts make efficient implementation of the Bangaru Thalli scheme possible. The education department has joined hands with the medical and health departments, village, ward secretariats, and the ICDS department to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Take Home Ration Scheme: Recognizing the vulnerability of pregnant and lactating women to anaemia, officials have implemented the Take Home Ration scheme. This initiative ensures that over 23,861 women receive a nutritious ration, including mixed millets and wheat flour, dry fruits, rice, oil, eggs, and milk at their doorstep every month.

The Bangaru Thalli scheme represents a holistic approach to addressing anaemia in the Palnadu district. By combining regular health monitoring, nutritional support, and awareness programs, this initiative aims to create a sustainable impact on the health and well-being of the community, particularly targeting adolescent girls and women at risk of anaemia
