Beyond Culture: The Psychological Aspect of Violence Against Women in Manipur

When violence against women becomes prevalent and tolerated, it erodes the fabric of society. Trust between genders is shattered, and women live in constant fear, limiting their freedom and potential. In turn, this hampers social progress and economic growth since half of the population is oppressed and unable to contribute fully to society.

A horrifying incident from Manipur has recently come to light, revealing a distressing attack on two Kuki communities women by Meitei communities men. The unfortunate incident occurred after misleading reports of a Meitei woman allegedly being raped by Kuki militiamen. This retaliatory violence initiated a deadly cycle of revenge against Kuki tribal women, allegedly carried out by Meitei mobs.

The Dark Side of Human Psychology: Throughout history, various forms of gender-based violence have plagued societies across the globe. From discrimination and verbal abuse to physical harm and sexual assault, these heinous acts have inflicted unimaginable suffering on countless women. It is essential to recognize that such acts do not represent the entire male population; instead, they are committed by a subset of individuals who harbor deep-seated psychological issues.

Dehumanization and Objectification: One fundamental aspect of this dark psychology lies in the dehumanization and objectification of women. People who commit such crimes often view their victims as mere objects or commodities to be controlled, dominated, and discarded at will. By stripping their victims of their humanity, these offenders can justify their actions, falsely believing that women's feelings and rights are inconsequential.

Roots in Patriarchy and Misogyny: The roots of this violence can be traced back to patriarchal systems that perpetuate gender inequalities and reinforce traditional gender roles. Such societies often foster an environment where men are conditioned to see themselves as superior to women, resulting in deeply ingrained misogynistic beliefs. As a consequence, women are perceived as weak, inferior, and unworthy of the same rights and respect given to men.

The Impact of Cultural Norms and Stereotypes: Cultural norms and stereotypes further worsen the issue, as they can influence the ways people perceive and interact with each other. In societies where women are depicted as submissive, passive, and lacking human beings, men may feel entitled to exercise control over them. This sense of entitlement can manifest in violent actions, as seen in the recent incident involving the Kuki and Meitei communities.

The consequences of such acts on human civilization are grave. When violence against women becomes prevalent and tolerated, it erodes the fabric of society. Trust between genders is shattered, and women live in constant fear, limiting their freedom and potential. In turn, this hampers social progress and economic growth since half of the population is oppressed and unable to contribute fully to society.

Moreover, children growing up witnessing such violence may internalize these behaviors as normal and perpetuate the cycle of abuse in the next generation. This perpetuation of violence damages the evolution of a more compassionate and empathetic society.

Inability to Put Themselves in Victims' Shoes: Another psychological aspect at play is the inability of these perpetrators to empathize with the victims. They do not consider how they would feel if they were subjected to such brutality, which further desensitizes them to the consequences of their actions.

Empathy Deficit: Imagine if someone treated you or your loved ones in the same brutal manner. It would undoubtedly evoke feelings of fear, anger, and helplessness. But some individuals who commit such acts fail to empathize and understand the pain they inflict on others. This lack of empathy and perspective-taking leads to the normalization of violence against women and perpetuates a cycle of abuse.

Empathy, the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, is crucial for fostering compassion and respect for fellow human beings. Individuals who engage in gender-based violence often lack empathy toward their victims, making it easier for them to inflict harm without remorse or consideration for the consequences of their actions.

Breaking the Cycle: Education and Awareness: Addressing this deeply rooted issue requires a multifaceted approach. Education plays a vital role in dismantling harmful stereotypes and promoting gender equality. By teaching individuals to challenge traditional gender roles and cultivating empathy and respect for all genders, societies can foster a more compassionate and inclusive environment. Moreover, it is crucial to raise awareness about the consequences of gender-based violence and the broader impact it has on communities.

Encouraging open discussions about such matters can help break the silence and encourage survivors to come forward while holding people accountable for their actions. To build a safer and more equitable civilization, we must collectively address this psychological aspect. By promoting empathy and perspective-taking, we can encourage individuals to treat everyone with respect and kindness. Education and awareness campaigns can help challenge harmful beliefs and foster a culture of gender equality and mutual respect.

As a society, we must unite against any form of violence, particularly when it targets a particular gender. By standing up against such acts and advocating for stricter measures to hold perpetrators accountable, we send a powerful message that violence will not be tolerated.

Challenging Gender Stereotypes and Norms: We must challenge prevailing gender stereotypes and norms that perpetuate a hierarchical view of gender. Breaking down these barriers will promote a more unbiased society, where men and women are regarded as equals in every aspect of life.

In conclusion, the psychological aspect of dehumanization and lack of empathy plays a crucial role in the perpetration of violence against women. We must actively work to combat this mindset and promote a culture of empathy, respect, and gender equality. Only then can we truly create a civilization where every individual can thrive without fear of violence or oppression?
