Breast cancer : One of the most misunderstood diseases in India

▴ Breast cancer
One of the most widespread diseases in India, breast cancer, is still one of the most misunderstood one.

According to data released by National Health Profile 2019, incidences of common cancer rose by as much as 34% between 2017 and 2019. Despite efforts from the government to spread awareness about this potentially dreaded disease, there remains lot many myths surrounding breast cancer.

Breast cancer cannot occur in males : It is true that breast cancer is most common amongst women, but it can also occur in males, because of the presence of mammary tissue in males.

Breast cancer is genetic : Only 10% of the breast cancer cases have genetic background. Rest of the cases are sporadic.

Normal blood tests means no breast cancer : Solid tumour including breast cancer may not affect blood tests or may affect only at later stage. So normal blood tests are not an indication of absence of breast cancer.

More sugar intake means higher chances of breast cancer : Though cancer cells utilise more sugar than normal cells, studies have shown there is no link between growth of cancer cells and sugar intake.
