Recovery Rate improves while ICMR increases testing capacity

The government today said the COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 62.08 per cent and a total of four lakh 76 thousand 378 people have recovered from the infection in the country so far. In the past 24 hours alone, 19,547 people have recovered from Coronavirus.

The Health and Family Welfare Ministry said, a total of 24 ,879 new cases have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 7,67,296. This is the highest number of fresh cases recorded in India since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in the country. In a single day, 487 deaths have been reported taking the nationwide toll to 21,129. Presently, the total number of active Corona cases in the country is 2,69789.

Indian Council of Medical Research, ICMR said that a total of two lakh 67 thousand 61 tests of coronavirus samples were conducted by various laboratories in the country in 24 hours. This is the highest number of tests conducted by the laboratories in the country in one day since the outbreak of the pandemic.

So far, 1,07,40,832 tests have been conducted.

ICMR is continuously increasing its testing facilities for Covid-19 by giving approval to government and private laboratories. As of now, one thousand one hundred 32 laboratories across India have been given the approval to conduct Covid-19 tests that include 805 government laboratories and 327 private laboratory chains.

Meanwhile, IIT Alumni Council has signed an agreement with the CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (CSIR-IGIB) to jointly conduct research on COVID-19 and patient data analysis. It may be noted that the council is setting up the world's largest molecular diagnostic lab 'MegaLab Mumbai'.

According to a statement issued yesterday, the council handed over imaging data of over 8,500 patients, who were admitted at the COVID Care Facility at Worli’s National Sports Club of India. IIT Alumni Council President Ravi Sharma has said that this partnership will not only create a world-leading testing and treatment ecosystem but also establish global data leadership. Late May, the Council had announced the launch of the world's largest virology lab testing centre with a capacity of conducting one crore tests. The first phase, with a capacity to carry out 10 lakh tests, will be ready by the end of this month.

The IIT Alumni Council is the largest body of alumni, students and faculty from all the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology and partnering Technical Institutes of Excellence and was formed last year to carry out projects of social importance.
