A recent study published in BMC Public Health sheds light on the preferences of medical students at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) in Iran and emphasizes the importance of mobile-based approaches in promoting health education and awareness.

Contrary to the perception that students are inherently healthy due to their youth, research indicates that unhealthy behaviors are prevalent among this demographic. The study conducted at SUMS aimed to identify the preferred sources of health information among medical students and assess the feasibility of mobile-based approaches in health education. The researchers developed a comprehensive questionnaire comprising various media sources, including academic resources, formal news channels, mass media, internet searches, social media platforms, and informal conversations.

Analyzing the Results: The study received responses from 500 medical students, revealing insightful preferences regarding health messaging media. Social media platforms emerged as the preferred choice among students, with Telegram, Instagram, and WhatsApp being the most favored channels. These platforms offer a dynamic environment for communication, enabling students to engage in discussions, share content, and exchange opinions effortlessly.

Additionally, official and unofficial health and academic sources, internet searches, and mass media were identified as valuable sources of health information for medical students. The findings underlined the significance of diverse media channels in catering to the varied preferences of students and enhancing health literacy.

Implications for Health Education: The study results highlight the importance of leveraging mobile-based approaches to deliver health education effectively. Mobile applications, social media platforms, and messenger applications offer unparalleled accessibility and convenience, making them ideal tools for health promotion initiatives. By harnessing the power of digital platforms, educators and healthcare professionals can reach a broader audience and foster meaningful engagement.

Health policies must prioritize virtual capabilities and invest in innovative strategies to enhance health knowledge and awareness among medical students.
