The nationwide protest highlights the deep concern and frustration within the medical community over the safety of healthcare workers.

The tragic assault and death of a female postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata have sparked nationwide protests, leading to significant disruptions in healthcare services, including at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The incident, which occurred on August 9, 2024, has ignited outrage across the medical community, culminating in widespread strikes and demonstrations.

At AIIMS Delhi, the strike has caused a severe decline in hospital operations. According to Dr. Nirupam Madaan, Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Delhi, the hospital has witnessed a more than 90% drop in outpatient department (OPD) consultations, patient admissions, and scheduled surgeries. While essential services such as emergency care and intensive care units (ICUs) continue to function, other vital departments, including radiology and laboratory services, have seen an 80% reduction in activity.

In solidarity with the protests, doctors at AIIMS Delhi organized a campus march on Saturday, voicing their demands for justice with posters and chants. The Indian Medical Association (IMA), which represents doctors across the nation, has called for a 24-hour strike, urging all medical professionals to withdraw from their duties, except for emergency services. This strike began at 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, and will conclude at 6 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

The IMA’s National President, Dr. Asokan, has publicly called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the circumstances surrounding the trainee doctor’s death. The association plans to formally request the Prime Minister’s involvement to ensure justice is served and to prevent such incidents in the future.

The nationwide protest highlights the deep concern and frustration within the medical community over the safety of healthcare workers. The Kolkata incident has highlighted the urgent need for stronger protections for those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. As the strike continues, the medical fraternity’s unified call for justice serves as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of ensuring a safe and secure working environment for doctors and healthcare professionals across the country.
