May 1 – International Labour Day – Be a good worker and do not succumb to technology

Labour Day should be a day to not only recognize the hard work of labourers and workers but also to make them aware of their right of overall well-being. As sea and sky merge in the horizon, technology has merged the professional and personal life of workers. It is imperative for them to stop being slaves of technology.

May 1 is observed as the International Labour Day or the International Day of Workers to recognize the hard work of labourers and workers across the globe. It is the day to be aware of one’s rights. This day is also commonly referred to as May Day. This day has its origin in the United State’s Labour Union Movement of 1889. Marxist International Socialist Congress worked hard for and got a resolution passed that workers should not be working more than 8 hours every day. It was the year 1923 that the first labour day in India got celebrated in Chennai and gradually over the years, it has become a day of National Holiday.

Do not be slave of technology

Many of the workers are working more than the required 8 hours and have lost sense of how professional life is eating up their personal life and personal time. Access to devices like laptops and collaborations with teams on different platforms on the internet has made even holidays as work days. Added to that is the multinational teams who work on different time zones and someone or the other’s personal time gets interspersed with the professional time of a team mate on the other side of the globe. Added to this is the work from home culture which has made working from the bedroom, from the living area and communicating and attending work calls even in the kitchen a norm. As sea and sky merge in the horizon, technology has merged professional life into the personal life of workers.

Be an organized worker

A sorted-out routine is not anyone else’s but your responsibility. You should know when to start and when to end your day. A good worker is one who knows how to have plenty of rest so that he / she can return back to work rejuvenated. If you are spending more time working and compromising rest, then the number of years that you could be a good and productive worker would get compromised as there will hardly be enough energy in you to carry on and on  with an improper routine or improper work life balance. So, organize your working schedule in such a way that you get nourished by a healthy work routine without hampering your overall well-being.
